Harvest Gold on the Tharavos Road

October 19, 2026

A horse-drawn cart of sacks and baskets on a road through golden harvest fields at sunset

Tharavos is the citrine crown, and you'll smell it before you see it. Warm straw, bruised apples, dust that's been baking in the sun all afternoon.

The roads here are wide because they have to be. Carts go out loaded and come back loaded, and nobody enjoys being stuck behind a wagon of turnips. Drivers know every rut by name. They'll tell you the names, too, if you stand still long enough.

Citrine is the gemstone of the province, and the light behaves like it. Around late afternoon the whole country goes the colour of weak tea with honey stirred in. Stooks of grain throw long shadows. The farmhouses look like they were poured rather than built. Even the mud looks expensive.

Tharavos grows what the other crowns eat. Garnet-red Caelondor, violet Eiloria, green Veythar, blue Morvane on its coast: they all send someone down these roads sooner or later with coin and a list. The farmers are polite about it. They also know exactly how much a loaf is worth in a hungry month.

The fifth month of the year carries the crown's name. Whether that's an honour or a warning depends on whether you're hiring hands or looking for a bed. A week here has eight days, and a farmer will swear every one of them is market day for somebody.

If you're travelling through, eat on the road. Buy bread still warm from the back of a cart, hard cheese cut with a pocketknife, apples so cold they ache. Honey comes on the comb, wrapped in a leaf, and it'll stick to everything you own for a week. Worth it.

Inns in Tharavos are loud, full and generous with their portions. Nobody's going hungry in a place that grows the food. They might still charge you for the candle.

The cart ahead has lost a sack again. A boy jumps down and runs back for it, laughing, and the horse doesn't slow down at all.
